VolTra Warehouse International Workcamp 2011

Location: Warehouse Teenage Club at Aberdeen
Type of workcamp: Festival/Cultural/Youth/Environmental/Renovation
Aim : 1. Promote and appreciate the culture and tradition of the Lunar New
Year
2. Beautify the living environment of the teenage club through
renovation work, planting and farm site formation by global and
local voluntary power
3. Promote the friendship, understanding and solidarity among local
young people and cross-national workcampers
Voluntary Work: 1. Set up, decorate and operate the flea market booth with local young
people in the Aberdeen Winter Fiesta before Lunar New Year
2. Prepare, produce or pack up the products and materials for sale at
the flea market
3. Remove Mikania and weeds within the premises to help protect the
plants and keep the area out of mosquitoes
4. Use wooden plates and paints to design and produce new sets of
signages and install them within the premises
5. Pick up shredded leaves to set up compost with buckets to facilitate
organic gardening in the premises
6. Re-paint the deteriorated facilities within the premises, like
handrails of staircases, etc
Accommodation: Dormitories of Warehouse
Age: 18 or above
Cost: Osavõtumaks 1000 EEK + EstYESi liikmemaks 250 EEK + vabatahtlik peab maksma ise reisikulud.

Name of the project: DIVERSITY
Duration of the project: 6 months
The project has 2 main activities:
-in different kindergartens and schools in Bucharest , presenting your culture to the children trough artistic activities and games
- in three hospitals for children where A.C.T.O.R. performs clinic animation programs
Other activities can be about getting involved in A.C.T.O.R.�s internal events like campaigns, sessions to promote volunteering, the national origami contest.
Working in kindergartens and schools
The volunteer will be in these institutions the ambassador of his culture. Thats why we would like to have volunteers from different countries from all Europe in this project, so that the children will experience the diversity of European cultures.
The volunteers have to find creative ways of working with children so that they will learn by discovering while interacting with the world around him in a non-formal and motivating way.
Each volunteer will make a plan with educative games, stories, songs from his country, divided in 5 or 6 meetings.
Example of subjects for each meeting:
1.
Observing the sounds of the volunteers language:
Simple funny nursery rhimes, songs with movements, presenting short cartoons/ movies in the volunteers language
2.
Observing colors and shapes :
Traditional costumes, flags, national symbols
Collages
Role playing games
Introduction in the national legends
3.
Observing the national rhytms and dances of the culture:
Dances
Coordonation and cooperation games
Playing the traditional music
4.
Testing the national tastes and smells:
Prezenting pictures with the national food
Bringing samples of the national food
5.
Playing games from around the country of the volunteer:
Specific games in the volunteers country
6.
Observing certain traditional events in the volunteers country:
Movies/ Photos
Realizing a mini event like the same as the original
The volunteers will have one meeting per week with each kindergarten/ school, so that in one week they will go to around 5 different kindergartens/ schools, deploying all kinds of artistic activities- painting, dancing, theatre or educative games.
Choosing the activities depends on the volunteers way of expressing himself and interacting with the kids the best. The children are divided in age groups and the method may depend on that.
These activities have to follow the values of the kindergartens and to open the childrens mind to the cultural diversity around them.
Through attractive, playful and interactive ways, the children should discover and understand themselves and the world around them better.
Also, having as teachers and friends interesting personalities from Europe will improve their communication skills and their trust in them.
Working in hospitals
The clinic animation program takes place in 3 different hospitals: 3 days per week, around 3 hours per day. The categories of children from the hospitals are with orthopedic problems or burned, from the oncology section or with lung problems. Some of them are also from poor families or from other social areas with problems.
Their treatment often requires a long period in the hospital, an unfriendly environment for the child.
The volunteers go in the hospital rooms and play with puppets, draw, read, make different creation workshops, make origami with the children, depending on what the condition of the child is and on the way the volunteer likes to express himself.
Sometimes only talking with the child in a friendly and optimistic way can improve his state.
Working with Romanian children
Working with children from 3 to 14 years old or from hospitals can be challenging sometimes, but seeing the progresses they make after working with you can be very satisfying. If you are calm, patient, responsible, careful, but in the same time creative, funny, skillful, you are a good candidate for working with kids and you should use your potential. Also, you have to know how to make yourself listened to; because children are the most exigent audience.that could be another challenge for you!
Working in this project does not require professional abilities in any of its activities. Your participation is expected to take the abilities you have in this domain to the next level as it will be proved in your Youth pass.
The intercultural experience
Once you are here, you will have the opportunity to discover the Romanian culture from inside. The children you will work with and the system they are in will be an important way to observe and to learn more about us.
You will also meet other Romanian young people, as well as other European volunteers hosted by A.C.T.O.R. and this could be a very valuable experience for you!

For all participants coming from different European cultures and countries the YE will be great opportunity to learn and to discover cultural heritage not just all participants countries but also they will have a chance to take part in Carnival of Vevcani and discover one of the oldest Macedonian and Balkan cultural tradition through interactive way - through participation in Carnival.
The main characteristics of the carnival are the archaic rituals, the mysterious mask and the art of improvisation. The carnival can be described like two days of total freedom, two days full of archaism, secretiveness and improvisation. According to its specific features, it differs from all other carnivals in the world, because its a massive event in everybody from the village takes part. For the participants of the YE is also unique opportunity to meet local community and to break prejudices and stereotypes on both sides.
During the YE the participants will take part in variety intercultural tasks and exercises as well as they will together work on national and/or group masks which they will wear in the carnival.
About participation: Every country will be represented by 5 participants and 1 group leader. Please, remember that the participants should be in age 18 to 25. Also, we would like to ask you for gender balance in your group.
Accommondation : The YOUTH EXCHANGE will take place in Struga, in hotel Solferino located at Partizanska street from which nothing is far. Moreover the participants will have an opportunity to visit the place of the carnival - small village called Vevcani as visit Ohrid one of the most beautiful city in Macedonia.
Cost: Osavõtumaks 1000 EEK + EstYESi liikmemaks 250 EEK + vabatahtlik peab maksma 30% reisi kulust.
